Welcome!
The Metropolitan State University of Denver Human Identification Laboratory is the first of its kind in the Colorado region. The lab was founded in 2010 by Dr. Catherine Gaither to address the need for a formal forensic anthropology laboratory that can work in tandem with law enforcement agencies. Our main focus is to train upcoming generations in the science and function of forensic anthropology as well as to provide necessary services for the recovery and analysis of unidentified human remains.
We are unique in our position on a tri-institution campus with a convenient downtown location. Undergraduate students will receive invaluable experience working in the field and in the laboratory on real cases under the supervision of Dr. Catherine Gaither (see bio). This will give MSU Denver students an edge as they apply to graduate and doctoral degree programs. This will ultimately place Metro State and Denver, Colorado on the map for this new and increasingly valuable field.

Vision Statement
The Metropolitan State University of Denver Human Identification Laboratory is committed to providing a high quality laboratory facility staffed by professional forensic anthropologists and trained laboratory personnel who can aid law enforcement agencies and other first responders in the recovery, identification and forensic analysis of unidentified human remains. This would include more typical crime scene investigations such as the recovery and analysis of human bodies, as well as assistance with mass disasters, such as domestic plane crashes. In order to provide these services, the MSU Denver Human Identification Lab will employ recognized forensic techniques and procedures for testing biological evidence recovered from crime scenes and crash sites, including but not limited to gross and histo-morphology, microscopy, reconstruction techniques and numerous databases. Forensic specialists will also routinely sample specimens for DNA and chemical analyses where appropriate and accredited laboratories will be utilized to process the samples. The MSU Denver Human Identification Lab is dedicated to providing accurate, ethical, impartial, and legally defensible forensic services.
